Technology Enhancing Policing
Bait cars have been a success in British Columbia and the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) have added ALPR (Automatic Licence Plate Recognition) to their tool kit, enhancing their ability to tackle stolen autos, unlicensed and uninsured drivers and vehicles, and identify vehicles of interest to police.
The ALPR system allows one police vehicle to scan up to 600 plates per hour.
The system was put into operation in BC in early November 2006 after several months of trials and outstanding results.
ALPR is not unique to BC and is in operation in a number of locations throughout the US and UK.
The following links take you to the provincial IMPACT web site and also to view the ALPR video directly from the IMPACT web site..
Air One is BC's first dedicated traffic safety helicopter. Fully equipped for the task and purchased through funding from ICBC (Insurance Corporation of BC), Air One is another step in BC's traffic safety strategy.
Additionally, Air One has also assisted in the apprehension of individuals involved in other criminal activities. Air One's activities can be tracked on the RCMP's Lower Mainland Traffic Safety Helicopter web page.
Although air traffic units are relatively new in British Columbia they have been a part of policing in many metropolitan areas for some years now.
