The Canadian Police College (CPC) is a centre that provides advanced and specialized training for the members of the Canadian and international policing community. It is the only institution of its kind in Canada with a particular focus on multi-jurisdictional training to address the growing threat of national and transnational organized crime. The CPC has a broad scope and purpose, and complements the police training programs of federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal police agencies and of civilian academic institutions.
Each year, the CPC offers roughly 200 sessions of over 55 advanced and specialized training courses and workshops, welcoming to its Ottawa and Chilliwack campuses approximately 4000 law enforcement officers from across Canada and around the world. Its faculty is composed of experts of the Canadian law enforcement community from various jurisdictions and disciplines, known as the very best in their field. Its programs, consistent with leading edge methods and techniques, include the following areas of expertise:
• investigative techniques,
• forensic identification,
• explosives disposal/investigations,
• high-tech crime investigations,
• leadership development for law enforcement executives,
• professional development for Aboriginal policing.
The CPC is also home to the Canadian Police College Library, Canada’s largest police library which houses one of the most comprehensive collections of police material in North America. The Library holds approximately 65 to 70 per cent of the world’s English language police literature. Its catalogue comprises French and English material, which is available on the Internet.
On the international front, the CPC developed and delivered a number of workshops in support of Canada’s foreign policy and trained approximately 220 law enforcement officers in Canada and abroad. Each year, it also hosts a number of visiting delegations and course participants through exchange programs. In addition, the CPC is one of the founding organizations of the international network Francopol, and the administrator of Francopol Canada, which supports the sharing of best practices to help develop new trends in police training in the French language.
For over 33 years, the CPC has been recognized as Canada’s national police college and it continues to play a vital role in the law enforcement community. By providing advanced and specialized training across Canada and around the world, the CPC provides a unique opportunity for experienced law enforcement officers to integrate, meet in-person, form networks, exchange information and best practices, and be part of the larger policing community.
The CPC also offers state-of-the-art facilities available to all public sector departments, agencies and corporations. Its conference, classroom and meeting facilities can accommodate various presentation and training needs. It features 121 residential rooms, a 60-seat theatre completed by video teleconference capability and an interpreter’s booth, a 65-seat classroom, syndicate and breakout rooms, and internet-ready computer classrooms.
